Abandoned Hospital (Part 2)

After last weekend's trip into the old Neurosurgical Clinic only gave opportunity to take some pictures, I took the liberty of going back this saturday to make a little movie.

In bleak and cold weather, and this time, I was alone.
The building where the film was made is really unstable, there are holes in the ground and a lot of the walls have been stabilised with wodden supporting columns.
The weekend before I went there and took photos and although it is winter and really cold, there have obviously been other visitors. There were new graffitis and someone had made a fire in the small auditorium, the smell was still there.
The wind really made for an eerie feeling, too, because the thick plastic covers over the windows were making noises and the draft inside the building caused windows to suddenly close and open again...

Abandoned Hospital

After exploring the remains of Kiel's former railway depot last week, this week's target was a partially abandoned hospital complex made up of at least four buildings.
I managed to get into three of them.
The area itself has been "re-populated" in parts. Some of the buildings have been renovated, some have been torn down and new ones have been built.
Four of the big hospital buildings are still abandoned and pretty easy to access.

The complex was built around 1900 and during WWII was used as a military hospital for the navy in Kiel. After the war, the buildings were used by the university, whose buildings had been partially destroyed during the war. For example, the Department of Neurosurgery was relocated into the old hospital.
In 1988, the hospital was closed down.

Abandoned Railroad Tracks

About half a mile from my home you can get access to an abandoned railroad area.
Until the 1970s, it was the Railroad Depot Kiel-West. After that, most of the buildings and rails have been demolished, turned into parking lots and re-taken by nature.

Anyway, it made for a pretty nice sunday afternoon excursion, especially since I had never been there before, and I like discovering "my" city.

The real highlight for me though was the old radio telescope that's located near the very end of the tracks in a building that once belonged to the Electroacustic Ltd. (now ELAC) and hasn't been used since 1976. It still looks cool, more than 50 years old and at the time only the second radio telescope in Germany and with a huge antenna of 7,5 meters in diameter. You can check out its history here.

Abandoned Sanatorium Beelitz-Heilstätten (Part 3)

While I was running around the abandoned hospital with the Nikon Camera and my iPhone, my wife was carrying the Fujifilm and I have to say, she shot some nice pictures herself.

She has a good eye for little special things, such as these dragon head roof elements in one of the big rooms:

Since I had no flash for the Nikon with me, I had to take the Fujifilm down to the basement to explore...

And here are some more photos we took with the Fujifilm:
